Five hydrogen-powered Coradia iLint trains, built by Alstom, are operating in Lower Saxony, Germany. Nine more will be added in the coming months. The trains use hydrogen fuel cells to react stored hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with clean water vapor as the only byproduct. The electricity is used to turn electrical motors attached to the train’s wheels.
“Alstom says the Coradia iLint has a range of 1,000 kilometers, meaning that it can run all day on the line using a single tank of hydrogen. A hydrogen filling station has been set up on the route between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude.” (Link)
